Chapter 14

It was just after dawn when an noise woke Pascal from a deep sleep; something that didn’t fit with the quiet chirping of the cicadas and the sound of waves lapping at the beach. Jess was sleeping peacefully in his arms, her long golden hair spread over the pillow like a silken fan, and he spent several moments just looking at her, unable to help himself. He’d met a lot of beautiful women over the years since he’d joined the Agency, some of them clever, sharp and calculating, but he didn’t think he’d ever met one with the astounding combination of beauty, brains and compassion Jess possessed.

“No wonder Fortuna’s got eyes for you, angel,” he whispered, kissing her brow lightly. “Even not showing him who you truly are, it’s obvious you’re out of my league.”

The noise that had woken him sounded again, and he lifted his head, eyes narrowing. That was a boat engine, and not a fancy motor yacht like the one that had picked them up in Puerto Rico. It sounded more like a tramp steamer, a small freighter.

Slipping out of bed, he headed for the window on silent feet, twitched the drapes aside slightly. The villas had been built facing the beach, but he could just see at the edge of the view, the island’s single jetty. And the four men standing on it with a large flatbed trolley.

A boat nosed into view then, a rustbucket of a thing, the kind of tiny anonymous tramp freighter which wouldn’t raise a second glance pulling up to any pier in the Caribbean to deliver a few supplies.

Pascal was only interested because of Fortuna’s statement about waiting for pieces to be in place. The arms dealer had been notably irritated about having to wait another day to start his business.

The men on the dock caught ropes thrown from the little freighter and tied it off, but the engines never shut off running. A hatch was opened, a ramp pushed across level with the pier, and the trolley pushed onto the boat.

A minute later it came back off with a large wooden crate strapped atop it, wheeled off along the dock out of sight.

Pascal would have loved to see where they were taking it, but he didn’t dare open the French doors in case someone was keeping an eye out for watchers. If he was correct, Fortuna would be showing off later anyway.

The ramp was pulled back onto the boat, the lines untied, and the tramp freighter chugged away again, a stream of black smoke hanging in the clear early morning air for a few minutes before dissipating.

“Hm.” Was that crate big enough for the three suitcase nukes? He didn’t think so. Nor did he think Fortuna would put all his eggs in one basket; the man would never trust anyone that far. No, he thought only one of the weapons had been brought in on that freighter, and the other two were probably far from here, widely separated and closely guarded, awaiting instructions for delivery.
